Really happy with the fence Tim built for us. He was easy to deal with, turned up when he said he would, and put a lot of care into getting everything right. 01 — Posts
Wind is what finishes fences off
A solid paling fence catches an enormous amount of wind. If the posts are shallow or the concrete is thin, the whole run starts to lean within a couple of seasons and there is no fixing it short of starting again.
Post depth gets set to the height and the exposure, footings are concreted properly, and on the windiest boundaries a slatted or louvred design lets air through instead of fighting it.

Privacy, wind and compliance usually pull in different directions. Working out which matters most on a given boundary is the first conversation.
Boundary fences
Paling and butted timber fences at standard and raised heights, including shared boundary work with the neighbour involved.
Slatted screens
Horizontal or vertical slats with a set gap. Screens the view, filters the wind and looks considerably better than solid paling.
Pool fencing
Timber pool barriers and gates built to the current rules for height, gap spacing, self-closing gates and the non-climbable zone.
Slatted, paling or picket
The style follows the job. A slatted screen filters wind on an exposed boundary, palings give full privacy where the wind is not the problem, and a picket run suits a street frontage where a solid fence would be overbearing.
02 — Boundaries
The neighbour is part of this whether you like it or not
Under the Fencing Act a neighbour can be required to contribute to an adequate fence on a shared boundary, but only if the correct written notice is served first and the fence is reasonable rather than an upgrade to suit one party.
If you intend to pursue a contribution, serve the notice before work starts. Tim provides the written specification and price you need for it.

Fencing questions
Height limits and shared boundaries account for most of what people ring about.
How high can I build without consent?
Auckland's unitary plan allows fences up to a set height on internal boundaries without resource consent, with lower limits near the road frontage and extra rules on some sites. Anything above that needs an application, and Tim checks the specifics for your address before pricing.
Is your pool fencing compliant?
Yes. Barriers are built to the current requirements for height, gap spacing, gate self-closing and latching, and the non-climbable zone either side. Council still inspects and signs it off, and the build is done with that inspection in mind.
Can you match an existing fence?
Usually. Older palings weather to a colour new timber will not match for a season or two, but profile, height and rail spacing can all be matched so the join does not stand out.
What about gates?
Gates are where cheap fencing shows itself first. Ours get braced properly and hung on adjustable hardware, so a gate that drops after a year can be trued up rather than replaced.

Tim replaced our small grass area with a ready lawn after the existing area had been dug up due to drainage works and dried out. We are very happy with the result and now have a thick (and visually pleasing) lawn.
