01 — Why build one
Reaching the half of your section nobody uses
Plenty of coastal properties have good land sitting idle because getting to it means crossing wet clay, a bank or a gully. A raised timber walkway solves that for a fraction of what excavating and paving the same route costs.
Boardwalks also work where the ground cannot be built on at all: over drainage lines, tree roots, boggy ground and faces too steep to level without retaining.

Most jobs are a combination rather than a single element. The value is in the transitions, so the run from back door to lawn to garden reads as one route.

02 — Detail
Keeping timber safe underfoot
Any timber in permanent shade will grow a film through winter. Grooved boards help, grit tape on the treads helps more, and an annual wash deals with the rest.
Where a run is heavily shaded Tim specifies a non-slip insert from the outset rather than retrofitting one after somebody slips.

Boardwalk questions
Every walkway is site specific, so these are general answers. The site visit settles the detail.
Can you build across tree roots?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to choose a boardwalk over a paved path. Piles are positioned to miss significant roots, and the structure sits clear of the ground so the root zone keeps getting water and air.
Do walkways need consent?
Low walkways generally do not. Once a structure gets above one metre off the ground, or carries a stair flight with a significant drop beside it, consent and a compliant balustrade come into play. Tim confirms this before pricing.
How wide should it be?
Nine hundred millimetres is comfortable for one person with a wheelbarrow. Anything carrying two people side by side wants twelve hundred. Wider costs more in piles as well as boards, so it is worth thinking about honestly.
Will it need maintenance?
A wash each spring and a coat of oil every year or two. Structurally there is very little to do if the piles and drainage were right at the start.

Access problems are not specific to one suburb.
