Really happy with the fence Tim built for us. He was easy to deal with, turned up when he said he would, and put a lot of care into getting everything right. 01 — Decking
Decks and retaining walls, framed to suit the ground
The boards are what people look at, but the substructure decides whether a deck still feels solid in fifteen years. Post depth, bearer sizing and fixing type get set to the site rather than to a standard recipe.

02 — Walkways
Getting to the half of your section you never use
Plenty of coastal properties waste good land because reaching it means crossing wet clay or a bank. A raised timber walkway solves that for a fraction of what excavating and paving the same route costs.

03 — Retaining
Walls fail on drainage, not on timber
Walls that lean or blow out rarely fail because the posts were undersized. They fail because water built up behind them. Every wall gets a drainage layer, a coil and an outfall that actually goes somewhere.

04 — Fencing
Wind is what finishes fences off
A solid paling fence catches an enormous amount of wind, and shallow posts start to lean within a couple of seasons. Post depth gets set to the height and exposure, and on the worst boundaries a slatted design lets air through instead of fighting it.

05 — Turf & planting
Turf, planting and edible gardens
A build is not finished while the ground around it is bare clay. Instant turf goes down over a base that has been cleared, levelled and topsoiled, so the lawn holds rather than sinking into ruts over the first winter.
Planting is chosen for the exposure it will actually face, and irrigation is run before the turf and beds go in rather than retrofitted around them. Edible gardens are a growing part of the work, including raised planter boxes built to suit the space and a run-through of how to keep them producing.

Tim trained as a joiner and builder, and brought workshop standards outside with him. That shows up in the parts of a build nobody photographs: whether the framing is square before the boards go down, how the end grain is sealed, what the fixings are made of on a section three hundred metres from the sea.
Twenty five years across Auckland and the Hibiscus Coast covers everything from show garden work to full section builds, and the structural work still does not get subbed out. If you talk to Tim about a deck, he is the person who will build it.

Tim replaced our small grass area with a ready lawn after the existing area had been dug up due to drainage works and dried out. We are very happy with the result and now have a thick (and visually pleasing) lawn.
Tim from The Landscape Company responded to a job I posted on No Cowboys. A small job with a tight timeframe at a time of year (leading up to Christmas) when it can be difficult to get things done. Tim was committed to getting the job done on time, working in the rain one day and even delayed his holiday by a day to complete the job. We were very grateful as it enabled us to give a new puppy a safe area.
